Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a technique that allows you to lose weight and reshape specific areas of the body by eliminating fat deposits, which improves the proportion and image of the body.

Despite being in good health and exercising a reasonable level, some people have a disproportionate body as a result of localized fat deposits. This lack of harmony is usually due to personal characteristics, rather than lack of weight control or exercise. Sometimes if we try to reduce the volume of specific areas of the body with a diet or exercise we achieve a thinning of areas that we do not want, which continues the lack of harmony.

Liposuction surgery can be used to treat stubborn fat accumulation in certain parts of the body, including:

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Thighs, hips and BBL
  • Arms, neck and back
  • Inner knee
  • Chest
  • Cheeks and chin
  • Legs and ankles

In some cases, liposuction is performed alone, in other cases it is combined with other plastic surgery procedures such as breast reduction or augmentation, or surgery to tighten the skin of the abdomen.

Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or being overweight, it is not a substitute for regular exercise and good nutrition. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite, the dimpled skin that often appears on the thighs, hips, and BBL.

People with fat deposits in certain areas of the body are the best candidates for this procedure.

The first visit:

In the first visit the doctor will ask you:

Why do you want to have liposuction surgery and what do you hope to get?

Medical conditions, allergies to medications and medical treatments, previous aesthetic treatments (surgeries especially if there is a previous liposuction, infiltrations, etc.)

In addition to taking a complete medical history, they will also explain the possible results of liposuction and the risks or potential complications.

With the help of a mirror, you will jointly evaluate the lipodystrophy areas that bother you and that may be susceptible to liposuction, as well as the natural areas of the body that are deeply attached and that must be respected to maintain the natural lines of your body. It will also explain the different existing liposuction techniques, their applications, advantages and disadvantages, and which is the most suitable in your particular case.

Preparation for liposuction surgery

Before liposuction we will ask you for a series of tests that will include laboratory tests, ECG and sometimes a chest X-ray.

It is important to stop smoking or to reduce consumption a lot.

Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and derivatives because they can increase bleeding.

The day of surgery

Once admitted to the clinic they will prepare you to go to the operating room.

Liposuction can be done under local anesthesia, local + sedation, spinal anesthesia, or general anesthesia.

Liposuction is usually done on an outpatient basis, but it is important that someone accompany you home and stay with you for at least the first night after surgery.

Risks of liposuction

Your plastic surgeon and / or staff will explain in detail the risks associated with liposuction surgery.

They will give you informed consent forms where the risks and possible complications are explained in detail.

It is important that you read and fully understand the informed consent brochures that we will provide you before signing them.

Liposuction: procedure steps

The first step in liposuction is pre-surgical marking. It consists of drawing with a marker with the patient awake and in conjunction with it the areas to be treated. Areas of lipodystrophy (accumulations of fat), body depressions (areas of adherence, lack of volume), previous scars, cellulite, asymmetries, etc. are indicated. It is very important since the agreement is reached again with the patient in the consultation.

Anesthetic options include local anesthesia, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best option for you.

Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions.

The lipodystrophy areas are first infiltrated with a solution containing epinephrine to keep bleeding that can occur during liposuction to a minimum. Once infiltrated, sequential liposuction of each area to be treated is carried out until the desired symmetry is found. Finally, the incisions are closed with simple stitches and a tailored girdle is placed depending on the area that has been treated.

To see the results, you will have to wait for the inflammation to disappear. This period varies depending on each person but is usually not less than three months.

It is important that you keep your weight stable during the first year and especially during this period you should maintain a healthy diet and do regular exercise within your possibilities.

Recovery

Once the procedure is complete, you should wear a compression girdle for a minimum period of 1 month. This girdle helps control inflammation and facilitates adherence of the skin around the new contour.

In specific cases where the liposuction has been extensive or the skin has excessive laxity, your surgeon may recommend the use of a second phase girdle for 1 more month.

We will give you specific instructions that may include:

  • How to care for your skin and incisions.
  • Medicines to apply or take by mouth to aid healing and reduce the chance of infection.
  • On occasion, secondary procedures to reduce excess skin may be necessary for a good result.

Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction

What anatomical areas can be treated with liposuction?

In fact we can treat practically any area where there is an excess deposit of fatty tissue. The areas most commonly treated with liposuction are the abdomen, inner thighs, cartridge belts, waist and knees, although with the current less aggressive and more effective procedures we can treat practically any area such as ankles, calves, front of the thighs, back, gluteal area ...

Is traditional liposuction the best option compared to new techniques that have appeared?

The most important thing when having liposuction is having experience and skill in performing the procedure. We can help each other with new procedures but the most important thing is the skill of the surgeon.

I am personally passionate about laser liposuction but I use it as an extra to improve the usual technique. In other words, I perform laser liposuction when indicated but almost always combined with fat extraction (that is, traditional liposuction).

What techniques are there for liposuction?

Vibroliposuction: The main variation with respect to traditional liposuction is that the cannula to extract the fat is driven by a motor that oscillates it back and forth, regularly and with smooth movements. With this technique there is less precision and if you do not have enough experience you can create more asymmetries.

Ultrasonic Liposuction: Ultrasonic liposuction uses very high frequency waves to "melt" fat before removing it. Through an incision slightly larger than the standard liposuction incision, a cannula is placed into the fat deposits. When ultrasound is applied, the fat surrounding the tip of the cannula becomes liquid and is removed with less suction than in conventional liposuction. It is a technique that offers less precision and requires more experience to obtain correct results. Vaser liposuction is one modality of this procedure.

Lipolaser: It allows us to remove fat more precisely, less bleeding and greater skin retraction. For large volumes it is necessary to associate it with conventional liposuction, achieving the best of both techniques.

I have overweight. Can I have liposuction to improve?

The first thing you have to be clear about is that liposuction is not a technique that is used to lose weight. Weight loss will be limited. If being overweight is your main problem, you should lose weight through a regimen. Liposuction is indicated if you have disproportionate areas of fat accumulation. In other words, both an overweight person and a thin person can benefit from liposuction if they have areas with a disproportionate accumulation of fat.

Even being a little overweight, it may be that a liposuction gives you a more harmonious shape without pretending to be thin and you can be very thin and have disproportionate holsters that improve with liposuction.

How is a patient who wants to undergo liposuction evaluated?

The first sight is the most important. At the first sight, the surgeon will evaluate you and recommend the areas to be treated in order to have a better result. During the first visit it is important to explain to the surgeon the diseases you have and if you consume any type of drug.

He will also explain that to obtain a long-term result it is not enough only to perform liposuction surgery but   also to change habits that especially include a control in diet and routine exercise.

It is also important that you tell the surgeon what your expectations are so that he understands what you expect and assesses whether it is possible or not.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction consists of removing excess fat through 2 to 4 mm thick cannulas inserted through small incisions in the skin.

What should I do in the postoperative period of a liposuction?

The most important thing is to wear a compression girdle that sometimes when the first week passes must be adjusted so that it continues to carry out compression and the skin adapts correctly. I also recommend lymphatic massage sessions from 4-5 days to reduce inflammation  with the consequent acceleration of the healing process, decrease postoperative pain and optimization of the skin adaptation result in the treated liposuction areas.

You will also have to take a series of medications that we will prescribe to minimize the possibility of infection and reduce inflammation.

What are the risks of liposuction?

In healthy patients, the risks are low. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks of bleeding, infection, or poor healing. Irregularities in the skin, such as ripples or sags, can occur; as well as the asymmetry between the sides. Depending on the way you heal, the swelling can persist for months, and in rare cases, a slight increase in skin pigmentation can occur.

If I gain weight after surgery, will I be the same as before?

No. The fat removed in the operating room disappears permanently. Liposuction removes fat cells and leaves the treated areas uniform.

The rest of the fat that remains can increase in size if you do not take care of yourself, but the increase will maintain the harmony achieved during the procedure.

What contraindications does the intervention have?

Liposuction is contraindicated in patients who are excessively overweight (remember that it is not a weight loss method). It is not indicated if the skin is very loose. If there are very pronounced varicose veins, the surgeon must assess this circumstance. In addition, liposuction is contraindicated in pregnant women and in those with a poor general medical condition.

When will I look good?

To obtain a definitive result, you have to wait a minimum of 6 months after the traditional liposuction procedure, although normally after 2-3 months you will see a good result. Wait for the inflammation to go down. This period may be somewhat shorter in the case that the liposuction is with laser given the less inflammation that it produces.
