Until a few years ago, localized fat accumulation deformities did not have an acceptable surgical solution, with liposuction being the technique that has revolutionized the correction of these problems. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, but is intended to correct those body regions in which fatty accumulations persist that are habitually unruly to dietary regimes. Using this technique, fat can be aspirated from different parts of the body: hips, thighs, knees, ankles, arms, abdomen, face, etc. Sometimes it is complementary to other interventions (face lift, tummy tuck, etc.). Liposuction is usually performed under local anesthesia and sedation, but in very extensive cases it will be performed under general anesthesia. The technique, which is always performed in an operating room,It consists essentially in the aspiration of the fat by introducing a cannula that is connected to a vacuum machine or a special syringe, as the case may be, and making numerous tunnels in the previously marked area. Once the operation is done, a compression bandage or an elastic garment will be used depending on the area treated. It is normal for bruises and swelling of the tissues to appear in the aspirated area. The results of liposuction should not be evaluated before a minimum of three months have elapsed. If the skin elasticity was reduced, irregularities or small depressions may remain that may require additional correction through selective liposuction and / or fat injections.

What is liposuction?

Women can undergo liposuction in the double chin region, hips, thighs, abdomen, under the arms and around the breast.  Result after liposuction. Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a surgical technique used to remove fat deposits from certain areas of the body, including the cheeks and neck, arms and breasts, abdomen, BBL, hips and thighs, and knees and ankles. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, but a method to remove localized accumulations of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise. If you are considering liposuction, you will learn basic information about the surgery, when it is indicated, how it is performed, and what results can be expected. However, it is impossible for all your questions to be answered, since they largely depend on personal factors and the preferences of the plastic surgeon.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

The ideal candidates for liposuction are those who have a relatively normal weight but who have accumulations of fat in localized areas. If you are in good general health, have psychological stability, and are realistic in your expectations, you will be a good candidate. The most important thing to obtain an optimal final contour is to have firm and elastic skin (the skin that "hangs" will not redistribute itself over the new body contour and may require some additional surgical procedure to remove the excess skin). Liposuction is not recommended if you have had a recent surgery in the area to be treated, if you have poor circulation in that area or if you have heart or respiratory problems. It is also important to know that liposuction does not improve cellulite. Liposuction will improve your appearance and self-confidence, but it will not make us look like someone else or treat us differently. Before deciding whether to have liposuction think about what you want to achieve and discuss it with your plastic surgeon.

Planning liposuction

Men can undergo liposuction on the double chin and around the hips, it is also used to reduce enlarged breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia.

 Result after liposuction

During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will evaluate your general condition, the existing fat deposits and the tone and firmness of the skin. Alternative methods to improve body contouring, such as a tummy tuck, will be explained to you, and the options or combination of procedures that are best for you will be discussed. You must state your expectations in a sincere and frank way, so that the plastic surgeon is also frank and shows you the available alternatives for your problem, with the risks and limitations of each of them. The type of anesthesia to be used, the need or not to enter the clinic where the surgery is performed, and the costs of the intervention will also be explained to you. Liposuction for cosmetic purposes is not included in the catalog of Social Security benefits. Be sure to count if you have had any significant weight gain or loss. You should also tell if you are a smoker or take any medication or vitamin. Feel free to ask any questions that arise, especially those related to your expectations of the results.

Preparing for a liposuction

If you are going to have extensive liposuction, discuss the possibility of having an autotransfusion; If your plastic surgeon deems it necessary, your own blood, drawn in advance, will be used to replace the blood and fluids you lose during surgery. You will be given instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on taking food and liquids, tobacco, or taking or abstaining medications, vitamins, and iron supplements. If you have a cold or infection of any kind, especially a skin infection, the surgery may be postponed. Also make sure that a family member or companion can take you home when you are discharged and that, if necessary, they can help you for a couple of days.

Where is liposuction performed?

Healthy, non-overweight patients with localized excesses of fat and elastic skin are the best candidates for liposuction.Liposuction is performed in the operating room, within a clinic or hospital. Liposuction should not be performed in consultations or rooms since they do not have the minimum aseptic conditions and equipment. Many times it is carried out on an outpatient basis, without the need for admission. In very extensive liposuction, an admission of 2 or 3 days may be necessary.

Anesthesia

If the procedure is not going to be very extensive, that is, if the amount of fat to be removed does not exceed the amount that your plastic surgeon considers depending on your health, body size and surgery, you can undergo local anesthesia plus sedation. In some cases, epidural anesthesia can be used, the same one used for some deliveries. If your plastic surgeon plans to liposuction large areas or treat several different areas, general anesthesia is preferred.

Surgical technique

A liposuction usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours, but the time varies (from 30 minutes to several hours) depending on the area and the amount. Initially, a small incision is made, enough to be able to insert a hollow tube called a liposuction cannula. The other end of this cannula is attached to a machine that produces vacuum or a special syringe. The surgeon moves the cannula between the fatty deposits located under the skin, breaking the fat and sucking it out. Sometimes additional incisions are necessary to remove all the fat deposits. If the procedure is done under local anesthesia, you may feel some vibration or friction. During liposuction, fluid is lost along with fat, and it is crucial to replace it to avoid a "shock".You will be given intravenous fluids and even, if necessary, a blood transfusion (usually autotransfusion).

After liposuction

The surgeon inserts hollow cannulas through small incisions in the skin.

After surgery, drainage tubes can be placed under the skin for 2 to 3 days to reduce the possibility of fluid accumulation. A girdle, stockings or elastic bandage will be placed over the treated area to control swelling and bleeding and to help the skin adjust to the new contour. It is usually necessary to wear it for 2 to 3 weeks, and then only during the day for a few more weeks, depending on the instructions of your plastic surgeon. Antibiotics may also be given to prevent infection. Don't expect to look your best right after surgery; it will also be heavier due to the excess of fluids that are administered. The liposuctioned areas will be swollen and bruised and you may have a burning sensation. The pain can be relieved with the medication prescribed by your plastic surgeon. You may lose sensitivity in the treated area; don't worry, it will return. It is not uncommon to feel somewhat depressed in the first days or weeks after surgery; know that it is normal and that it will give as you look better.

Healing is a gradual process. Your plastic surgeon will instruct you to start walking as soon as possible (to prevent venous thrombi in the legs), but do not do strenuous activity for 2 to 4 weeks. The stitches will be removed between 5 and 10 days, and you can return to work in 2 or 3 days, or at most, after 2 weeks from the intervention, depending on the extent of the liposuction and the recommendations of your surgeon. The swelling and bruising will disappear in the first month or two after liposuction; however, minimal swelling can be maintained for 6 or more months.

Are there risks? Are there guarantees?

Liposuction is a safe technique, as long as the patient is well selected, the operating room is well equipped, and is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. However, in some cases complications can occur, especially when large amounts of fat are removed at one time. Another rare but possible complication is fluid build-up (which must be drained) and skin injury. Although serious complications are very rare, infection and excessive fluid loss can cause a serious situation. Risks can be reduced by choosing a qualified plastic surgeon, who performs this technique in a licensed clinic, and carefully following their instructions. Liposuction scars are minimal and strategically placed so they are hidden, even when we wear a bikini. However, there may be some aesthetic problems, regardless of the experience of the plastic surgeon, such as ripples on the treated skin, pigmentation changes that can be permanent if we expose ourselves to the sun. In some cases, asymmetries may occur that require a second intervention.

The results

Liposuction is a very effective technique to provide a new body contour with minimal scarring. The results can be permanent, as long as you maintain a proper diet and exercise regularly. If you gain weight, you will do so in a more homogeneous way and not only in localized fat deposits. Most patients are very satisfied with the results of their liposuction; they can wear more varied clothes and are more satisfied with their body. As long as your expectations for the future are realistic, you will be happy with your new silhouette.
